Lew Dunn Memorial Award for “WICC Volunteer of the Year”

Lew Dunn was the former President and CEO of CGU Group (now AVIVA Canada).  Lew passed away in 1999 after succumbing to cancer, succeeded by his wife, Sandy and their children.  In memory of Lew Dunn, CGU made a significant donation in his memory.

Selection Criteria:

  • volunteer (individual or organization) who has shown significant initiative in raising funds and/or awareness for WICC;

  • nominations are submitted to the WICC Secretary by February 1st  (in time for presentation at the annual WICC Dinner held in March) and reviewed by the Board of Directors, Ontario Chapter.

2008 Enterprise Rent-a-Car Canada

In 2007, Enterprise decided to direct the donations from their annual golf tournament to WICC and in two very short years have raised over $35,000 to support cancer research.

Enterprise was the recipient of a Gold Flame award in 2008.
2007 Nancy Thorne (WICC New Brunswick – “Fun Night”)

Nancy is a broker in New Brunswick and former cancer survivor. In 2003, Nancy and her colleagues organized a Fun Night which began as a Pub Night. Since then, this has become an annual community event in Saint John, NB. WICC is grateful to Nancy and her volunteers who have extended the reach of WICC into the New Brunswick community.

Linda Wahrer (WICC Board of Directors - past Co-Chair 2000-2007)

Linda Wahrer started her work with WICC at its inception 12 years ago and has functioned as the WICC Board Co-Chair for the past 7 years.  She sat on the Founding Committee of WICC, chaired the WICC Golf Tournament, and was instrumental in the incorporation of the WICC Board of Directors and its bylaws. Linda's collaborative and results-oriented style has helped to define and achieve some of WICC's loftiest goals.

Linda has been an outstanding WICC ambassador whose charisma, passion and dedication to WICCC have been truly unparalleled.

2006 ING Canada

In May 2005, ING was the title sponsor the Ottawa Marathon. Imagine over 27,000 people of all ages, generations, able bodied, disabled and from various countries gathered to partake in the ING Ottawa marathon!

This 3-day event was a sea of activity with numerous events – 2K, 5K, 10K, ½ Marathon and Full Marathon events that could be walked, ran or in-line skated. There was something for everyone!

ING launched a challenge to their branch offices in Ontario. Approx 600 ING employees & family members participated, and collected pledges of just over $20,000. In 2006, the number of participants tripled!

ING will once again be sponsoring the 2007 event, and once again has selected WICC as its charity.

Cumulative contributions from the ING Marathon:

ING was presented with a Gold Flame award in 2005.

2005 Fred DeFrancesco

In 2004, Fred De Francesco, principal of Fairview Insurance Brokers collaborated with Bill Blakeney of Blakeney, Henneberry and Murphy, to conceptualize an event in support the WICC objective and with the help of a team of solid, devoted volunteers delivered the inaugural A Night at the Races under the trackside tent to rave reviews. In 2004, The Night at the Races was a runaway success donating $17,000.00 to the WICC objective.  One for a good “race” Fred and Bill hosted the 2005 Night at the Races.  With over 340 in attendance, this event contributed an astonishing $30,000.00 to WICC, for a cumulative 2-year total of $47,000.  Fred received the Gold Flame Award in 2005.

2004 Crawford Adjusters Canada

In late 2003, Crawford decided they would consolidate all donations/contributions in favour of one charity.  This would enable them to make a significant impact.  Hence, the beginning of “Crawford Cares”.  A committee was established who selected WICC as the charity of choice for their inaugural year.  Through a payroll deduction offering and various fund raising events, Crawford and their employees, have raised an astounding $50,000 in 2004.  $25,000 of this amount has been allocated to WICC’s National  Corporate Sponsorship Program which allocates funding to each of the WICC Chapters in Ontario, BC and Alberta.  Employees have voted WICC as their charity of choice for 2005.

 
2003 Eileen Greene, KRG Insurance Brokers Ltd

Eileen selected WICC as the beneficiary of donations in lieu of flowers when her mother, Maureen, passed away.  This raised over $1000.  Then, Eileen ran a marathon, once again in memory of her mother.  This time she raised donations from her clients, exceeding $13,000.  Eileen will be in attendance with her family who have come from across Canada (sister in Calgary) to mark the first anniversary of their mother’s passing.
